External MIDI in is fine until recording--how to fix?

I'm new to Logic Pro 9, but what I am trying to do seems straightforward. My ultimate goal is to create tablature for my different steel guitars; I've been able to enter the midi notes using step input recording and the step input keyboard, and create the tablature in the correct tuning and adjusting fretting positions. So far so good.

In order to enter notes in a way that is more consistent with a steel guitar, I created an external midi device (using a Midi Touch template on my iPad2) that is laid out like a fretboard and sends the appropriate notes. The iPad is connected via wifi, and I set up a network session in Audio Midi Setup and connected to the Midi Touch session. Next I created a software instrument and connected it to the network midi session, so that it would take midi input from the iPad but play the sounds using the software instrument.

Is that a reasonable approach?

Now when I send notes from the iPad I can hear them through Logic Pro, and it seems to work OK until I go to record. When recording it is as if most of the note commands are lost, so what I hear are a few random notes--often at maximum volume. The piano roll shows just a few of the notes that I sent from the iPad, and all seem to be of very short duration.

Any idea as to what is different in recording mode, and/or how to troubleshoot this?

I would like to enter notes using step input recording with the notes coming from external midi device, but I haven't been able to figure out how to get that set up properly. If step input mode works, then the recording issue is not as critical.

I've spent the better part of two days reading the user manual, but I seem to be stuck at this point.

Thanks...

I'm guessing the input problem you're having is in relation to "Live Input" (on a software instrument track) in combination with wifi/MIDI Touch input. A "live input" track uses quite a bit of resources, this is what happens when you enter record mode.

You would be much better off using an external MIDI keyboard which you can use for step input recording and would be easier and more accurate input.

One thing you can try as an experiment is to create an external MIDI track, the output will go into the bit bucket, you won't hear any sound, however... an external MIDI track won't have the overhead of a Live Input software instrument track

Is there some reason I can't use my iPad as the external MIDI device for step input?

I don't have experience with this type of input, have you tried the iPad with an External MIDI track as a test?

Even though you won't hear any sound it will clear up if the problem is related to the Live Input of a software instrument track.

If you have an external MIDI instrument, keyboard or module you could set that up as your tone generator.

Considering that I figured out bits and pieces of it over several days and consulted several different sources of information, I'll need to go back and do it from scratch to recall all the steps.

However, for some reason today when I clicked on the "midi in" button in either the piano roll or score windows, it started working. I did need to go back to my template and adjust the channel information so that the correct string is used for tablature.
