How do you close the apps at the bottom of the screen?

Please could I have some help with the above. The whole bottom of my home screen is full of apps that I thought I had closed. Can I get rid of them from here?

If there is a lighted dot underneath the icon on the dock then it's currently running. If not, it's just a shortcut to start the app. You can right click on any of the icons and select quit to stop it from currently running. To remove any unwanted shortcuts from the dock, just drag them off and the shortcut will disappear. The application will still be on the Mac in the applications folder.
