Time machine osx 10.6.8 problem slow backupd CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData(): Old-style plist parser: missing semicolon in dictionary. mdworker32 kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint() to catch errors as they are logged.

Hello Guys I have a problem that I can not get to the bottom.

Time Machine has suddenly stopped working it really slow to make up. Copy a few kb at a time and long hours it takes to close the back. (up to a few tens of megs, 10, 20 Mb).

I made the following list of tests that will follow along with the log file.

First of all I made a copy as root with Carbon Copy Cloner disk of the iMac. (So that they can go back in case of disaster)

Following the guides Pondini (pondini.org) I did the following steps:

1) Changed the internfaccia FW800 to USB hard drive (does not change anything, still slow)

2) Changed to another external HD for time machine with FW800 and USB (nothing changes still slow)

3) Recreated the full backup with Time Machine on either drive (still slow)

4) Reinstalled the 10.6.8 Combo Pack (still slow)

5) Re spootlight indexed with the disk (still slow)

6) At this point, in desperation I reinstalled on the internal drive of my iMac 10.6.8 creating a new user, User Migration Assistant from my hd clone with Carbon Copy Cloner. Recreated the full backup with Time Machine.

The first full backup is fast, but slow incremental backups are back (as to 'start a few kb at a time).

I compared the log files with those of my other machine with same configuration and I found these errors:

backupdir [19376]: CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData (): Old-style plist parser: missing semicolon in dictionary.

mdworker32 [20950]: kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint () to catch errors logged as They Are.

You know help me? I saw that this error is from 10.5 to 10.7, but no one has found a real solution to the issue.

I never installed antivirus software and tried with different external drives COPN capacity equal to or greater than the external drive. Only at the end I tried to divide the external drive to back up into two parts by a 1.5 TB and 500 GB but with the same mistakes that I have described.

thanks

Stefano

backupd[19376]: CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData(): Old-style plist parser: missing semicolon in dictionary.

mdworker32[20950]: kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint() to catch errors as they are logged.

Sapete darmi aiuto?

grazie

Stefano

Jan 9 08:12:05 ihomez mds[19366]: (Normal) DiskStore: Creating index for /

That may be a clue. Spotlight is creating a new index for your startup volume. There's no indication why, but that will take a long time, and slow down everything else. It may also make a TM backup slow to a crawl.

Is that the time when you manually started a re-indexing? If so, it's normal (but will take a fair amount of your CPU, and may slow or prevent indexing of the backups until it's done.

Some sort of a problem with what looks like a 3rd-party add-on to System Preferences. Something to do with Archives and/or Audio?

More Spotlight trouble, with a folder on your Desktop. Another thing that could slow your backups while Spotlight is trying to deal with this.

Another indexing problem with a file in the Downloads folder of your "home" user's home folder.

There are several others indicating various indexing problems. It doesn't look like there's really a problem with Time Machine iteself, but Spotlight (the mds, mdworker, and mdhelper processes) trying to deal with them all is interfering with your backups.

The only suspicious Time Machine messages are like this:

Jan 9 11:33:07 ihomez com.apple.backupd[21102]: Copied 716189 files (12.7 MB) from volume i5 2TB.

The file count is enormous.

Make sure the indexing of the internal HD completed. Check the Spotlight icon at the right of your menubar. If it has a tiny dot inside it, it's busily indexing something. Click it to see what, and if there's an estimate of how long it will take.

Also investigate the System Preferences problem, and the one with a file on your Desktop.

Thanks for the quick response.
I followed the steps you listed and also remove the files that were creating problems spootlight, including the audio plugin and the panel preferences file.

Then I stopped by the timemachine reindexed spootlight 'option in the preferences panel spootight privacy. After I restarted my iMac and formatted the external drive again, Time Machine and restarting a full backup. This morning after a quick full backup and disk indexing completed incremental backups are always slow. Proceeds with a few kb at a time. I resend you the log files and screen capture. My iMac is constantly backed up.
Thank you for your time.

Looking at the entries from backupd for process 479, that appears to be the full backup. In spite of all the other problems noted, it seems to have run very quickly, and completed at 6:34.

It looks like it started before midnight, so backing-up nearly 1 TB in 6-7 hours is quite fast, indeed. How is your Mac connected to the backup drive?

It also appears that a very large number of processes started after the full backup started, since the next one is numbered 1752. That's often a clue that some process is starting over and over.

But I don't see any messages from the incremental other than the last two that just show it starting.

I don't use dropbox, so don't know if it's normal, but it's sending a lot of messages.

You also seem to have some sort of font problem. See the messages at 02:38. You might want to use the Font Book app to validate & repair your fonts.

And still a lot of messages from mdworker.

Hello Pondini,

I wanted to inform you that in the end I managed to solve the problem.

I re-read your guide I read some post in the forum and I ran the sergeant steps:

1) enabled the root user and logged

2) disabled the backup from the preferences panel

3) disabled spootlight

4) delete the following hidden folders from the diskboot and external drive backup (. Fseventsd and. Spootlight-V100)

5) restarted the machine

6) spootlight rehabilitated (note that the disk to index this time it did not take 2 / 3 hours but 10 hours)

7) Time Machine Work now

I hope that this small procedure can be useful to other users.

It's all over now as a Swiss watch, as is usually the Mac!

Buongiorno Stefano ,

Grazie

Scusa il ritardo della risposta,

Dovresti seguire i passaggi che ho elencato in inglese comunque li rimetto in italiano:

Ho risolto eseguendo i seguenti passaggi:

1) abilitato l'utente root e loggato

2) disabilitato il backup dal pannello delle preferenze

3) disabilitato spootlight

7) Time Machine funziona ora

I think it might be worthwhile including the deletion of the invisible fseventsd file in the Pondini troubleshooting list ofthings to try, perhaps when all else has failed. In my case, my wife's hard drive failed and was replaced; we had the choice of restoring the entire drive to its new replacement from (a) Time Machine, or (b) a SuperDuper clone.

I decided to restore from the clone (b). The restore worked, and Time Machine resumed immediately with a full backup of the entire (new) drive, which I sort of expected, but then after several days the backups were taking 1-2 hours to backup just a few tens of MB, which included a few hundred thousand files. When an hourly backup takes several hours, basically the computer is constantly backing up ...

I deleted the invisible fseventsd file, restarted, Time Machine then did a deep traversal, and from then on backups each took about a minute.

This won't solve everyone's problems, but it helped in this case where hundreds of thousands of files totalling just some tens of MB were being backed up every time, taking ~ hrs for each such backup. Now the backups take a minute or so.

I have gone into Time Machine to do some spot checks and we have successfully restored a few files and folders that had been accidentally deleted, so at least for those spot checks, the Time Machine backups seem to work for restoring. I still do a clone now and then as a backup to the backup.

There's a similar discussion going on towards the end of this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3992838

Yes, on Leopard or Snow Leopard. On Lion and later, there's a UNIX command that can prevent it, per #B6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

Dear All,

I solved my issue after a long phone call with Apple Support. "Estrema Ratio" :I needed to initialize Machintosh HD and make a new clean installation of Lion iOS.

I didnt' restore the previous time machine backup but I did it manually with folders of interest.

Now I have a "new " Mac Book pro ultra Fast , clean, and with fast time machine backup .

greetings

Pierpaolo
