Trackpad won't selectively highlight

I recently had a new trackpad installed on my MacbookPro. When I try to selectively highlight text I can't click and scroll like I used to. I used to click and hold then scroll over my desired text and it would highlight it. Now it only highlights if I double click over a word or highlight a predicted segment of text the mac recognizes. Is this a setting issue? I'd really love to be able to selectively highlight by clicking and scrolling over the desired text again. Thanks!
