Does anyone have Logic Pro 9.1.6 running on Lion Server? I am planning to buy a Mac Mini Server, which I know has Lion Server preinstalled, but has the processor power and hard disk space that I need.
If needs be, I'll install plain old Lion (which I know will involve a bit of jiggery pokery), but if Logic'll work on Lion Server, there's no point.
I've been doing a bit a of research on this myself because I'm thinking of doing exactly the same thing - according to numerous other online resources, the Server administrative facilities need not be engaged, in which case the OS behaves identically to 'plain old Lion'.
I think someone may have mentioned it before on this forum (if you can find it) - also one or two of the regular contributors to the LogicProHelp forum are using Mac Mini Servers, if you want to check that out.

Looking at some of the posts on LogicProHelp, there's no difference between the two. Hmm.
It's not just Logic Pro, of course. There's the myriad plug-ins that might be picky about OS X versions (I'm thinking mainly about Native Instruments' plug-ins here) and what have you.
It might be less trouble in the long run to install Lion...

John - I think I'll probably opt for using the Server software - I can't honestly see any logical reason why there should be any problem if you don't use the Server aspects of the OS - its usually the compatibility aspect with regard to Lion and different plug-ins or device drivers that's likely to be a cause of concern, as you say, but that's not an unfamiliar scenario to me, he he...

I'm running Logic 9.1.6 on a current Mac Mini Server - got it roughly 2 weeks ago. The OS version is no different from a 'standard' non server Mac. The server just also comes with additional server software. I haven't run into ANY issues whatsoever. I replaced an '07 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo iMac - performance is much much better on the Mini Server. Additionally, because of the Hyperthreading capabilities of the 4 Core i7, Logic 'sees' 8 CPU cores instead of 4. Seems to make a big difference too.
Long and short of it - the Mac Mini Server seems to be Apple's great 'secret'. Go for it. Just when you initially set up the machine, don't select to run any of the server stuff. Doesn't hurt to also follow the steps in the thread about disabling the Lion Server functions....
I definitely recommend taking the machine to 8Gb - $40 here....

Many thanks for that, Noisenet. It's always good to hear that somebody else's mind has been going along similar lines. I currently have a PowerMac G4 1.42GHz, and a MacBook Pro 2011. Needless to say, the MacBook completely thrashes the G4 in terms of performance. The MMS should be better still.

Just to add a quick update to this - I got my Mac Mini Server today, setup with Lion was an absolute breeze and upgraded to Logic 9, which so far runs extremely smoothly, though obviously I haven't yet had chance to test everything on other than a superficial level. The additional content download took only about 35 minutes via a cable broadband connection (which fortunately is behaving itself today).
I've ignored the Server Setup and everything behaves just as expected, just need to spend some time re-authorising 3rd party stuff, which is probably the only nuisance, but today I'm a happy man đ
Just in case the above is misleading to anyone who makes reference in the future , the first download that I did didn't take long. There are a number of downloads which will take a considerable amount of time but the downloading process seems to work well if you stop it - it does resume.
So far, all seems well with Logic 9 and Lion but I have recently come from a G5 to the latest Mac Mini Server and everything's a clean install, so its all a refreshing experience to me at the moment !

Finally got my Mac Mini Server not too long ago, and I did try Logic on Lion Server without any of the server components. Its performance was blindingly good, but there were too many plugins that just would not work (none of the Arturia and NI plugins, which are the bulk of the ones that I use, variously would not work, install or authorise), so Lion Server was not an option.
Fortunately, using a MacBook Pro, which was running 10.7.3, I made a USB installer for Lion that worked perfectly on the Mac Mini; installation was a breeze. I am now up and running with the client version of Lion, still have the stellar performance that I need, and most of the plugins work (all of the most updated Arturia and NI plugins are fine).
I haven't upgraded the memory yet, and I'm already impressed.

Sorry to bring up a semi-old thread, but I have been wondering about doing this. However, the posts here say to disable the server components if you want to do this....which leaves me scratching my head....what's the point of bothering to run Lion Server if you are going to disable the server components - why not just run regular Lion?? I was hoping to setup my Mac Pro as a server for our entire home network, but still use it as my music production machine, which would mean I would want to run Lion Server as a server, and that doesn't seem to be what people are suggesting here.

The problem for a lot of people is actually getting normal Lion on to the Mac Mini Server. It always insists on downloading the server version rather than the Lion client version.
For myself, I wanted the extra storage and processor performance of the Mac Mini Server. Logic worked fine on Lion Server, but nothing from Arturia or Native Instruments would. If you don't need either of those two companies' instruments to work, you'll probably be OK running Lion Server. I don't know about other brands.
Luckily, I was able to get normal Lion installed and everything is peachy.
