iCal Alerts Disappear (synching with Google Calendar)

I'm synching three Google Calendars to iCal: two work accounts and a personal account, all running on Google apps. These calendars are all synched to my iPhone as well. I have the default alert setting in iCal set at 10 minutes. The problem is that the alerts don't seem to be synching up to Google calendar.

I noticed that none of my alerts were happening. After being late for a couple meetings as a result of this, I investigated. Here's what I've gathered.

  1. The default alert don't seem to stick.
  2. Additional alerts created in iCal don't stick either.
  3. Alerts created on my iPhone stick and synch up to Google Apps just fine - they show up in the Google Apps web interface as expected. However, these alerts dont' synch down to iCal.
  4. The problem is universal across all three accounts.
  5. Unlike the ongoing "can't delete events via iCal" issue that's well documented (and incredibly still not fixed) there's no mention of an alerts synch issue on the CalDAV known issues page.

I had originally set up the Google accounts to have no default reminders added, so I wouldn't have to deal with the extra email/SMS reminders. I have now added a ten minute reminder to all these accounts as a workaround. Now, when I create events in iCal, the ten minute reminder sticks. I have no real idea how this works, but it's as if when synching, iCal sees that Google Apps has a ten minute reminder as well, and there's no conflict. However, if I change the reminder interval, it just disappears. Also if I add a second reminder, say 40 minutes to remind me to leave to drive somewhere, those simply disappear as well. It seems like the correct behavior would be to pass up whatever reminder is set in iCal to Google Apps - that's not happening.

This is happening in iCal 5.01, running on OS X 10.7.2. Really frustrating - anyone have any ideas on how to fix or further troubleshoot? Thanks!

In fact, I also continue to have this problem, and the workaround doesn't work for me. I repeat the problem, in case it needs to be clarified again.

When I add a new event on Calendar 7.0 (on Mac OS 10.9.5, Mavericks), by default it includes an alert 5 minutes before the event. This alert is supposed to sync to Google, according to my settings in Calendar. However, when I go to calendar.google.com and I look at this very event (which has been successfully uploaded), the reminder is not there at all. How is it that the events are syncing properly, but the reminders are not?

Thanks!

I think my problem might be related. I have some of these issues (intermittently???), but I am having a constant issue with snoozing alarms. If I snooze them in iCal...they disappear. I snooze them to make sure I get them done later...and now I'm forgetting to do stuff. Argh.

I have the same problem. I use 5 google calenders in the family, we share them on 5 macs and 3 iphones.

Everyone is logged in as admin so they can change all calenders. It works and has worked great for 2 years since a few days/weeks?

I think something changed at googles end?

I cannot enter a reminder manually. They dissapear!

This is VERY annoying!

Edit: I just tested out that I CAN set up reminders in 10.7 lion and they also show up on iOS5. But those reminders DO NOT show up in 10.6.8 with the older ical. The adjustmens made in Lion also show up in Google Calender online. So basicly you cannot setup reminders in SnowLeopard with older ical ?

So I got to researching again today, because the utility of calendars is greatly reduced without functioning reminders.

There's a thread over on Google Groups that started in December about this very issue. There wasn't much helpful info until two days ago when someone posted about types of alerts and support between Google and iCal:

If you set the default reminder in your google calendar preferences, when you add an event in ical, the default reminder shows up.

In google I selected "pop-up" for my default reminder type.

When you look at the type of reminder that is set in ical, if you had selected "pop-up" in google, you'll see ical calls it "message".

I've always preferred to use the "message with sound" option in ical. So I tried changing my default alarm within ical.

The reminder/notification/alarm disappeared when I changed it to "message with sound".

When I added a new reminder that was just a message, it showed up, and didn't instantly dissapear. It also synced with my google calendar as expected.

I can live without the "boink" sound when my alerts pop up on screen, so long as they're popping up and not disappearing. Hope this helps some, at least until it starts working like it used to.

I had looked at the type of messages supported, but assumed that "message with sound" would simpy become "message" which is a "popup" to Google. Seems like that would be a more elegant handling of message incompatibility - "translate" the alert to a similar alert type, instead of just dumping it. Lame.

Anyway - this is good enough. I don't care as much about the sound as simply having reminders again.

The sound isn't important to me, either! Thank you for looking into that, surjit!

Now...how do I get the default in iCal to NOT be with sound? I do not seem to be able to find that setting. I tested it and, as long as I either create the event in my iPod or make sure I change the alarm to go without a sound it all works. But my default in iCal is with sound - if I forget to alter it, I'm screwed!

There's no way that I know of to change the type of default reminder set in iCal - seems it must be "message with sound" or nothing at all.

I set up default "popup" reminders in each Google Calendar of ten minutes - those sync down as "message" alerts. If you're not familiar with that, in GC go into your calender settings, then to the calendars tab and set your default notification as "popup."

If you look at the info for a new event right after you create it, you'll see the alert switch from "message with sound" to "message" as it syncs with GC. You can just disable the "message with sound" default reminder in iCal at this point - GC adds the default reminder on that side as the event is synched up and back down. I left the default reminder in iCal just in case this changes again.

This problem has now re-manifested in a different way. When I save reminders/alerts in iCal, they disappear again, but now reappear a littlw while later. This issue is mentioned on the Google Calendar Known Issues page.

Adding this as further info for those who find this thread - if the alert disappears, be patient. Maybe it'll come back. 😕

I've found one way to get a default alert, but it relies on the alert being pushed from Google when iCal syncs the event for the first time.

In Google's calendar site, on the left, mouse over the name of your calendar under the My Calendars heading, click the arrow beside your calendar and go to "Calendar Settings", then click the "Notifications" tab and in the "Event Reminders" section, set a default alert as Pop-up and save it on the site. Now, when you create a new event on your Google calendar account through iCal, it will add that alert into iCal the first time it syncs (cmd + R to manually force it to sync), and you should see it in iCal as just a "message" and not "message with sound".

I realize this thread is old by now, but the exact issue and the workaround fix still exists in Mavericks (10.9.4) and Calendar 7.0. So, I'm just throwing this out there again: Has anyone come across a fix that does not involve removing notification sounds from calendar alerts on Mac and still have then synced to Google Calendar? I can appreciate that not everybody needs sound notifications, but I kind of do.
