How to make 2011 iTunes recognize iPod Shuffle 1stGen?

Hi. I just got back my iPod Shuffle 1st Gen from a friend, and she hadn't really used it at all. I plugged it into my MacBookPro and started iTunes 10. Unfortunately the first generation iPod Shuffle wasn't recognized. What should I do? I visited an Apple Retailer in Finland, and they told me that iTunes should still be able to recognize it. I installed a PC version of iTunes to my second machine (running XP) but that did not recognize it either.
