Jan 9, 2012 12:53 PM in response to KeVofrom SCby OrangeMarlin,Did you try the "Headphone" setting? I believe the MBP thinks it's a pair of headphones, it's not that smart.

Jan 9, 2012 12:54 PM in response to KeVofrom SCby Zyriab,If your MBP is pre 2010 then you can't get audio thru' the minidisplayport. If your using the 3.5mm audio cable plugged into the headphone socket then select headphones as the audio out.

Set the Mac to headphones.
Your issue lies with the TV. It thinks the sound is coming through the HDMI. You need to go through the menus of your TV. One will be sound. Set it to something that sounds familiar, like "sound coming from an external source." None of us here are going to be experts on your TV, so you'll have to play around a bit. But the issue lies with your TV, not the mac.

Jan 9, 2012 1:04 PM in response to KeVofrom SCby Zyriab,★HelpfulFrom: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4241
These computers supply multichannel audio (up to 8 channels) and video signals over Mini DisplayPort:
- MacBook (Mid 2010) and later
- MacBook Air (Late 2010) and later
- MacBook Pro (Mid 2010) and later
- Mac mini (Mid 2010) and later
- iMac (Late 2009) and later
- Mac Pro (Mid 2010)
I wouldn't take the word of the staff in the Apple store, let's face it if they really were technical experts they wouldn't be working as shop assistants, would they???!!!

Jan 9, 2012 1:26 PM in response to Zyriabby KeVofrom SC,Yeah your right, I'm just really mad at them. It's a 45 Min. drive to the store, I had to go twice, parking fees etc. and still don't have what I want. If they don't know for sure, I won't mind if they say, let's try to find someone who knows or let's look it up together .. but pretanding being an expert ... . I'll try the settings for my TV but I fear, it just won't work ... so I'll have to make another trip to the store to bring the useless cables back But thanks for your help

Jan 9, 2012 1:38 PM in response to KeVofrom SCby Zyriab,Don't give up on this, it should work!!! The minidisplayport to hdmi cable will deliver the video - I'm guessing that's working fine, right?! If you have a cable with a 3.5mm stereo minijack on one end and 2xRCA connectors on the other (one will be white, the other red) then it should just be a case of configuring the TV settings to let it know where the audio is coming from. What TV do you have? If it's a Samsung then I can cross-reference with mine!

Jan 9, 2012 1:39 PM in response to KeVofrom SCby OrangeMarlin,I make no excuse for the salespeople at the Apple Store (and I don't work for Apple, so my excuses would be lame anyways). However, you cannot expect them to know everything about everything on the Mac. It's an obscure point, and if they were hired during the past year, the MDP to HDMI adapter works perfectly. Think about this: I use my Mac nearly 24/7, use several programs nearly 24/7, and I barely scratch the surface of this device. I use an iPhone 24/7, and I hardly ever drop over there, because there's just too many questions about too many obscure issues.
Again, I'm not sure why you're giving up? This is fixable, it's probably NOT an issue with your Mac or your cables. It's probably an issues with either 1) input setup of your TV, or 2) older TV with an incompatible HDMI firmware (1.1 say). You have everything to make this work, so why are you upset with the Apple folks? You got everything right except the TV setup.

Jan 9, 2012 1:50 PM in response to OrangeMarlinby KeVofrom SC,You know, I really accept that they can't know everything, but I asked him several times, if he is 100 % sure that this time I got the right cables and he reassured me, yes, you just plug it in and it will work. He not even mentioned that I would have to change the settings. That what makes me upset. And as I said early, I won't mind if these sales persons would say, I'm not sure, but we can look it up together to figure out. That would be absolutely o.k. with me. I guess it was just a bad timing, it was 5:45 pm and the store closes at 6:00 pm on Sundays. But you are right. I'll try again. Maybe I missed something. BTW it's a new TV, HDMI compatible. Thanks for all your help, I appreciate your support a lot!!!
