How can I open word documents written in previous versions?

Suddenly my MacAir started to refuse to open Word documents in earlier version that is word.doc rather than word.docx. Must have been a recent automatic update. There is a suggestion on the support site to open it from within word but it does not work and in addition it says the file is lock for editing.

How can I undo this negative progress?

No my problem is not with successive version of a file but with word.doc files that date back to months or years. I have this MacAir since August 2011 and until a few days gao there was no problem to open .doc or docx documents. But suddently the Mac Air cannot open doc files and the suggestion to try to open from within Word does not work. Another rilliant suggestion is to go sand covert it on a PC!

If it is some key combination that I hit by chance I like to know how to undo it
