Sending Faxes

I purchased an external USB fax modem for my Mac.

I'm able to send faxes but the Mac's built-in fax software always indicates the fax did not go through and is put on hold to try again in 5 minutes.

Yet I check and the fax was actually received by the recipient on the first attempt.

Any suggestions as to what might be causing this and how to solve it?
