Essentially, you're resetting a registry key to its default settings. The settings changes you're reverting might have been inadvertent (due to damage to the key), or might have been deliberately made by a third party program that monitors internet usage (by instituting a Layered Service Provider on the PC). So making the change will possibly impact on the software that set up the LSP.

Hi there, I'm having the same problem on OSX 10.8.2 - do you know if there is an equivalent fix on Mac? I've tried everything else and still can't connect to either iTunes or App store and it's driving me mad.
