The Apple store said I 'should' be able to do this but I want to know precisely how I go about it. Any help you can provide would be a appreciated. I have an 8GB USB stick and a MacBook Pro with the latest iTunes software. The TV is a Sony Bravia with a USB port. Many thanks.

I believe the iTunes movies are MPEG4, which means they would have to be converted to play on the Sony Bravia.

The person was mistaken, unless they thought you were going to put them on a stick drive plugged into your computer, play it in iTunes, then run the video output of the computer though the television. iTunes movies have DRM protection which means you have to use an Apple device/software to play them (as bobwild eventually did).

Sony Bravia TV mabe can't play iTunes files.I think you need to convert the M4V video to MP4 (h.264 video/aac audio) file for your TV. Then, transfer the converted video files to USB flash disk. I use below solution solve the TV M4V problem. It's so simple.
