Just double click the file - compression tools are part of OS X.

If it won't open with a double-click, it may be corrupted, but you can also try Stuffit Expander and/or The Unarchiver in case it's a non-standard zip.

If they can't open it, the problem is with the zip file. Try downloading again.

so If i have a, lets say... 10GB zip file and i just want to extract a 1MB file in that zip... Am I forced to extract the 10GB on default Mac system!? it's just ridiculous...

What happens when you click on the .Zip file you wish to look in and hit the spacebar?

On my mac it shows me the contents of the folder without extracting the files to my mac.

I believe this is what you were looking for and the other people that replyed did not understand.

That's what I did on my other computer. Now Adobe Reader is trying to open all my zips and says that it can't (duh!)

How do I set preferences for the built-in compression software and get Adobe Reader to stop trying?!

If you click once on the icon to high light it and then press command i you will get an info window. About half way down the window is a triangle with Open with. Click on that and then use the drop down menu to pick the correct application. There will be a dialog that asks if you want to open all these types with the same app. Say yes and Adobe will stop bugging you!!
