Can somebody please tell me why Pages is adding a double space every time I type a quotation mark or inverted comma. Can I turn it off and how???
e.g. I would expect it to do 'this' but instead I end up with 'this' . Same goes for "this" , I would normally expect "this".
Any advice???

Which language is your computer set to?
Have you looked in the Pages preferences' Auto Correction that there isn't added something that will add those spaces?
Which version of Pages do you have?
Thanks fruhulda, I have switched off the smart quotations setting on my computer. It has eliminated the double spacing but now I get only back pointing quote marks and not the curly ones.
is there a happy medium?
Take a look in the System preferences too. LAnguage and text. I think you find something about quotes there too.

As far as I know, Pages '09 is unable to use the System's quote preferences.

That is right, Yvan.
So, as the code available in iWork apps replace straight quotes by a single character 'local quotes' I don't understand how it may introduce extraneous spaces.
On the other hand, at last, the code embedded in the system is able to replace straight quotes as they must be in French.
Opening ones become « + space
Closing ones become space + »

Nor do I know it, Yvan? That is why I asked for which language the OPs computer is set to but I didn't get any answer on that.
When did you get your French version of quote plus space? Lion?
Problem Solved. It was the font that was causing the problem. The symbols ' and " in Kai font have a double space as part of the symbol that cannot be removed. A change of font has eliminated the problem.

It is usually a bad idea to use Chinese fonts for Latin text because they can have characters with twice the normal width and other oddities. Another recent case

Snow Leopard is able to replace straight quotes by strings of two chars (I don't know if it may use greater strings but i'm unaware of languages requiring that).
I took these screenshots under 10.7.2 but they apply also to 10.6.x (not to 10.5.x if I remember well).
