according to the storage area- i have 7.2 GB available, but when I try to download a TV series, it says not enough space?

Does it mean what it says? You make no mention of how much space the " .... TV series ..." is supposed to take up.
You are trying to download onto the iPad?
I don't know how much room the show will take up? I wanted to do season 1 of the wire.

Then how can you even begin to know whether or not it's supposed to fit into the space you have for it?
If you can't figure out any other way then D/L one episode, see how big it is, then do the math.
Chances are if you only have 7 GBs left on your iPad. You are not going to get a full season of episodes on it.
Video takes up a lot of storage/memory space.
If you have a computer with iTunes on it, you could try and download the entire season to your computer in iTunes and
either connect your iPad to the computer and sync individual episodes until you reach the limit on your iPad, or , if you have WiFi on both your computer and iPad, use iTunes Home sharing to stream each series episode from your computer's iTunes library to the iPad.
