"renamed"? Could you elaborate?
On Apple support website a screen-shot shows names for desktops in Mission Control, such as Safari, Mail, etc. rather than Desktop1, Desktop2, etc. I have not been able through Help search and OSX Lion book (Dummies) been able to find how to assign such names.
I see.
I think you get that by putting the apps in full screen mode.

I don't follow how this could change the name in Mission Control. Can you give me more specifics? Where in Full Screen Mode would this be entered/changed?
My (somewhat limited) understanding is this. If an application is in full screen mode in a given space, that space will have the application's name under it when it is displayed via Mission Control (and you put your mouse cursor over the desktop).

Naming in Spaces is a bit odd. If you create desktop spaces they are named Desktop 1 etc. If you put a program into fullscreen mode and go to Mission Control that program will appear under its name....as long as its just the one Window. But, if you have two different Safari windows - say one at Apple and one at Google - and put both of them into fullscreen mode when you go into Mission Control they now appear with the name of the document. Grrrr.
Thanks CT and dwb. I hope Apple makes spaces (desktops) more user friendly in the next upgrade. Your suggestions do work for the apps that allow full-screen display. I was trying to create a space for TurboTax so labelled. Guess that is not possible unless I employ some creative titling on the desktop photo for that space.
I use the third party app, TotalSpaces. See info (including a video of how it works) at http://totalspaces.binaryage.com/ As of today it costs $18.
