New to Mac. Love the photostream concept but cannot figure out if i take a pic on my iphone that appears on photostream, is it automatically added to my iphoto library on my mac or is there a way i have to add them? (If so, do I just drag and drop the photostream pics up to the library)

No you have to drag them to the library to save them in iPhoto

iPhoto -> Preferences -> Photostream
You can check a box here to automatically add them to iPhoto.
I have done both and they are still not showing up consistently! I have the option checked and i tried dragging them... Which then caused the "duplicates" box to appear. But when i go to my library they are nowhere to be found!
they are in an event named MMM 2012 Photo Stream if they were automatically imported

If they are in the Last Import album Control-click on one and select Show Event from the contextual menu.
That will take you to the event it is in and let you locate it amoung the other events.

That is EXACTLY what I needed to do! Thank you, so very much! For some reason when I connected my iPhone it dumped a whole bunch of photos into one single "event" (but not all of them, just to confuse me) over a long time from (most of November, in this instance). It also happened to have chosen the most innocuous photo of the bunch to make the "key photo" so that I wouldn't even think of looking in it for the ones I was missing. So now I've gone through and separated out the events and then joining them to the already existing events of the same event in the library! LOL!
Any idea what I may have done wrong to do this? Perhaps I need to connect directly with my Mac on a more regular basis (with photostream I get lulled into not connecting very often).
Also, would you know what is the difference between "create event" and "split event?" At first blush they seem to do the same thing, but I'm just not sure.

I don't take a lot of photos with my iPhone 4 as they just aren't as shart as my digital camera. But with PS turned on and the fact I'm on my iMac every day each new group of photos gets imported automaticall into a new Event as shown in this screenshot:
