i have an icon "Scanner Output" that has no action when you click on it and I cannot drag and drop it out of the sidebar in Finder. This has been the case for three or four months and through multiple restarts. in order to get to this data i have to go to the computer icon and get to the folder through finder.
anyone know where to search for a solution for this?

Try dragging it out holding down CMD.
Either right click and select to remove from sidebar or hold the command key while dragging off the sidebar.
The icon probably lost it's link to the original. Drag another there and try it.

i guess the CMD drag is a standard part of the OS in some instances...?

can i just ask you one last one here - which is what i am calling these things in mac? are they "keyboard commands" or "macros"? i think i need to read up on them again and see if i can utilize anything else over here/

Well I wouldn't say it's a forced moved as in there was trouble removing it, but just the way it's done. As posted, you could also right click on the item and select "Remove from Sidebar" in the menu.
Search keyboard shortcuts or commands for Snow Leopard. That will bring up sites to view shortcuts for the OS.
