Jan 11, 2012 1:08 PM in response to SiPhiby Texas Mac Man,★HelpfulYou have the latest versions for OS 10.3.x. You need to upgrade your OS to Tiger 10.4 or possibly Leopard 10.5. Sites like YouTube are not designed to work with browsers as old as yours.
Cheers, Tom
Download this version of Firefox browser. It's newer than Safari & may work better.

Jan 11, 2012 3:57 PM in response to SiPhiby MrAppleFanMan,★HelpfulSafari is not the only stable browser in Mac OS X Panther (the operating system that you are running). Opera will run quite nicely (with youtube.com) in Panther and your 1 GHz. processor should be powerful enough to handle videos in the lower-quality format (240p).
Try this version of Opera: http://mac.oldapps.com/opera.php?old_opera=28
You may have to install a version of flash player (you should be prompted) once Opera is installed and browsing on youtube.com.
I hope this helps.

Jan 11, 2012 6:33 PM in response to SiPhiby Texas Mac Man,If you are having problems viewing Flash videos, this hack may help.
If you are getting a message requesting that you download Adobe Flash Player & it takes you to FP requireing an Intel processor. Doesn't work on a PowerPC processor. I fould a hack, installed it & it works with Firefox, TenFourFox & Safari on Tiger & Leopard. Don't know about Panther.
Download this http://www.steelbin.com/FPforFBPPC.zip to your desktop, unzip it, and replace the current Flash Player plug-in which is in your main/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, (not the user Library). Save the old one just in case this one doesn't work.
Cheers, Tom

Jan 15, 2012 11:15 AM in response to Texas Mac Manby SiPhi,OK, thank you. I got the computer very cheaply off eBay for my parents. Could I get a copy of Leopard off eBay and install that on there? I want to make it as easy as possible for them to use. Also, is there a way of changing the original User Account to my parents, deleting the name of the original user?

Jan 15, 2012 11:32 AM in response to SiPhiby BDAqua,Leopard requirements/10.5.x...
* Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
minimum system requirements
* 512MB of memory (I say 1.5GB for PPC at least, 2-3GB minimum for IntelMacs)
* DVD drive for installation
* 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
Trouble is Apple no longer sells it, check eBay & such for the Retail version, not the Gray Discs...
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=mac+os+x+leopard+retail+10.5
Also, is there a way of changing the original User Account to my parents, deleting the name of the original user?
Open System Preferences>Accounts, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.
In the same pref pane highlight your old account, click the little minus icon, then use Disk Utility to Secure Erase Free Space.
All the old users files will be gone.

Jan 16, 2012 10:39 AM in response to BDAquaby SiPhi,Thank you. I think I might go down the Tiger route then, I don't want them to end up with a iOS 4 on an iPhone 3G situation. I didn't realise you could use the retail software discs more than once, so thanks again!

Jan 16, 2012 10:47 AM in response to SiPhiby BDAqua,You're welcome.
You could Install Leo/10.5 on an external Firewire drive & boot from either 10.4 or 10.5 as needed, Tiger/10.4 runs much better if it does what you need.

Currently, you need Leopard & iTunes 10.5 to sync Apple iDevices.
Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard installation system requirements
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24950
Leopard is no longer available at the Apple Store but may be available by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753).
If you can't obtain a retail install DVD from Apple, look on eBay or Google the installer part numbers to possibly find at an on-line store. Here's what to look for:
MB427Z/A Leopard 10.5.1 install DVD
MB576Z/A Leopard 10.5.4 install DVD
MB021Z/A Leopard 10.5.6 install DVD (single user)
MB022Z/A Leopard 10.5.6 install DVD (5-user family pack)

Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard Installation and Setup Guide

After you install the base 10.5, download & install the 10.5.8 combo update at http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update
The DVD should look like this
Caution - Leopard does not support classic mode. So, if you currently open OS 9 apps in classic mode, you won't be able to do this if you upgrade to Leopard.
Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store but may be available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753). For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A (10.4.6), MA190Z/A (10.4.3) and M9639Z/A (10.4). Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X)
and not a model specific version (gray) (See http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1976068 Can I use another Mac's system restore disc on my Mac?.
Also check these web stores: http://www.lacomputercompany.com/cgi-bin/rpcart/index.cgi?command=dispitem&type= sku&sku=19521 http://www.allmac.com/shop/index.php?cPath=5_10003
Possible Alternative if you are currently using Panther 10.3 – Do a Google search for Tiger 10.4 Upgrade DVD . It will upgrade your 10.3 to 10.4, but it doesn’t contain the full retail Tiger installer. Should be cheaper than the retail Tiger install DVD.
After you install the base 10.4.x, update to the final Tiger version 10.4.11. Here's the link for the 10.4.11 combo update http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Look at this link Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger Installing Software Support Page
http://www.apple.com/support/tiger/install/
You can also download the Tiger Installation and Setup Guide
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/Tiger_Install_Setup_Guide.pdf
When you upgrade the OS, do it via Archive & Install. See About the Archive and Install feature http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
Be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings. Also, repair permissions before and after the install.
Cheers, Tom
