Taking screen shots on osx lion

So I have a bit of a n00b question and I did try to google with no helpful answers.

I am trying to take screen shots and when I go into menues I cant work out how to take them... I do try press the shortcuts on the keyboard (for example command Z) as it says taking a screen shot of the whole screen is on the app "grab" in utilities and when I do manage to get the little pointer and select the place to take a picture I have no idea where its saving to.. it just snaps and I have no idea where its gone?

Easier option...

Use Preview > File > Take Screen Shot

Make your choice from the drop down menu and voila... save the output in the format you require and do with it what you want.

Try Command-Shift-3. This is built-in to OSX. Grab is useful for capturing part's of the screen, but I find Command-Shift-3 easier to grab the whole screen.

Not too sure where you got your shortcuts, but they may be incorrect. Here's all the shortcuts:

Keyboard shortcuts for Shut down, restart, and sleep

Mac OS X keyboard shortcuts

To snap the entire screen: COMMAND-SHIFT-3.

To snap a selected part of the screen: COMMAND-SHIFT-4 (use crosshairs to make selection.)
