iTunes Match explicit/clean music switch

Hey everyone,

First I guess that I should point out that I am using the current version of iTunes and iPhone software. Here's my problem.

I bought Drake's Take Care album (explicit and hardcopy) a few weeks ago and imported it into my iTunes library. In the computer that I imported it on, it plays the correct versions of the songs, but when I go to play the album on my iPhone 4s, it plays the clean versions. So somehow, iTunes Match put the clean version in the cloud, instead of matching it with the explicit.

Another oddity I found was with Mac Miller's Blue Slide Park (also explicit and hardcopy) that I imported into iTunes. When I play this album on my home computer it plays fine but once I play them on my iPhone, it plays completely different songs, except for a couple that play correctly. iTunes Match apparently did not match these songs correctly either.

As a side note, I imported Coldplay's new album into my iTunes library as well, and it matched correctly in iTunes Match.

I have tried turning on and off iTunes Match on my iPhone as the Apple Support lady said, but this did not solve the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this? I've not noticed if any other music is incorrectly matched in my library or just these two albums.

Thanks for the email address.

Again, for me it's not the problem itself, because problems happen. What bugs me is the lack of support, and the obvious confusion between these teams. I've also had issues, for example with the last outage, where the L2 rep told me the same thing that they had heard nothing about any slowdown or outage. In the meantime the service was effectively down for two days.

Ideally there should be a knowledge base and escalation point where these things can be addressed. For example, if someone has the ability to fix songs manually (as you claim happened) then that should be documented to the L1 reps so that way anyone else with the same problem can be directed accordingly. I'm going to flat-out ask them on the phone in about 15 minutes if this is standard procedure to fix these issues (I have a case number, as of yesterday).

I've called them every time I've had a problem, just to get my issues documented. I hope they are actually doing that and not just yessing me to death.

They stated they could fix it manually to me over the phone and that the email I was going to get would help me out with it. But the email response said nothing about it, so I don't know if they can or cannot. I just said by changing the setting it appeard that my purchased itunes music seem to be correct so far. Hopefully that stays that way at least for now. I'm not going though all my music when most of it that's not purchased through apple is having the "cleaning problem." I'll just sync most over USB for now.

Got an L2 rep this time, confirmed as a known issue and hopefully my particular album will be looked at by their Engineering folks in the next few business days. They have my album and iTunes ID, so they can look over what's there and fix as needed (we hope).

And the L2 rep mentioned that even if this can be fixed on a case-by-case basis, it's really not a long-term fix. The goal is to find root cause, if at all possible. Which I agree with 100%. This gentleman definitely sounded like L2 also - very on the ball so hopefully this will gain some traction (at least for the Jay-Z album).

Well I've just about tried everything that was posted on here. The cd I was experimenting with was 2Pac - Nu Mixx Klazzics Vol.2. This album came back clean every time. I was using MP3TAG to add the explicit tag which worked every time. The little red tag was visible in itunes. I then deleted the tracks, downloaded them back from icloud and the songs were clean (no surprise there) and the little red explicit tag was removed. I know we all need to keep experimenting to find a solution, but this really is getting frustrating. Not getting matches is bad enough, but when you finally get a match just to find out its edited just flat out infuriating.

I think I may just let this service sit until it gets fixed. I mean, they already have my $25 anyway. I was offered a refund but with my luck this will all be fixed as soon as I cancel. If you cancel, I was told you can't sign up again for a full year. Then I would really be losing out. I do think either the year ban should be removed or everyone should have a few months added to their subscription. Most of the subscribers on here are doing apples job troubleshooting for them instead of enjoying the service they prepaid for.

I call this one (USA) : 1-800-275-2273 then I say "iCloud" and then "Windows 7" (which is my main system, not a Mac like they keep asking) until they direct me to a rep. Then I ask for iTunes Match support, they ask for a serial # (which I now give them for my kids iPod because I gave up on fighting that battle) and then they direct me to "iTunes Match" support. It's really more like iCloud support, but that's fine.

I've had mixed results doing this. the L1's I usually get are cheerful enough, but usually have limited knowledge of Match. The last call I was directed to an L2, I'm guessing because the lines were busy and the L2's needed to jump in to reduce call volume. So in this case the rep was very helpful and knowledgable and hopefully will get engineering's ear to assist with this problem,

Btw, never made it to a Genius today as I ended up getting sick. 😟 Maybe next week.
