iMessage will not turn on

My iMessage was not working so I turned it off. I left it off for several minutes and when I went to turn it back on it asked me to verify by putting in my apple id and password. It then goes back to the previous screen and says waiting for activation. Any suggestions on getting iMessage turned back on?
