Classic ipod only showing cord and outlet icon after software update

just updated my itunes and ipod software and now my classic ipod (2005). After the update it showed an image of the power cord and outlet (which I have never seen before) so I plugged it in to the wall (not computer). Sometimes the screen is black like its sleeping but when I wake it up it is still only showing the icon of a power cord and an outlet and somethimes its just that image of the outlet and cord and I have had it plugged in for hours. Tried reloading it showed the low battery symbol for about 20 seconds then back to the plug and outlet icon. Got updayes because itunes on my mac werent recognizing my ipod and thought it might be because I needed an update. Any ideas? I love this old thing- up to now its worked like a champ!
