Jan 12, 2012 12:12 PM in response to Arn72by eww,So you selected a different keyboard layout from your usual while the machine was running, and now that you've shut it down, you don't know what keys to press to enter your password in the new layout? Is that where things stand?
If so, you can find pictures of all Apple's keyboard layouts here:

Jan 12, 2012 12:14 PM in response to Arn72by dominic23,Standard English explain please.
To select a language
Click System Preference from Apple Menu or icon on the Dock.
Click Languages & Text from the pane.
Use the Edit button at the bottom and select the language you want.
Hope it helps.

Jan 12, 2012 12:24 PM in response to ewwby Arn72,Thanks, this is sort of like the problem but to be honest it is even worse:
I cleaned the keyboard and while doing that I must have hit a certain combination of keys which changed the layout and now I don't even know what kind of layout is activated as the letters are hidden when entering the password..

Yes, you can do that by hitting apple/command + space. But you can only switch to a layout which you had previously activated in system prefs/language & text/input sources. So do you remember what those were?

"So do you remember what those were?"

Jan 12, 2012 6:21 PM in response to Arn72by fane_j,You haven't told us which Mac OS X version you're using.
Alternative suggestion, reset your password:
<http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1274>
(Under "Resetting the original administrator account password").
Then, to prevent something like this in the future, enable input menu at login
<http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4099>
or, in Lion, associate your Apple ID to your user account

Jan 14, 2012 2:31 AM in response to Tom Geweckeby Arn72,Sorry, it is me again.
The previous layout I was using was A German keyboard.
I figured out the following in the meantime:
When hitting the D the TM icon appears.
When hitting R , appears
When hitting K ^ appears
What kind of a keyboard layout is this?
Does it sound familiar?
Thx!

Jan 14, 2012 5:06 AM in response to Arn72by Tom Gewecke,If your keyboard has switched to the German layout, it should not be hard to figure out which keys to press to input your password, because we can all see that mapping on our machines using keyboard viewer and could email it to you or tell you the keys you need.
But the outputs you list do not correspond to any layout I have ever heard of.

Jan 14, 2012 6:00 AM in response to Arn72by noondaywitch,You have the shift and alt (opt) keys jammed.
Those are the symbols you get on the German keyboard for ⇧⌥D, ⇧⌥R and ⇧⌥K.
