You're welcome! Sometimes 5 year old advice still works. For anyone just joining this thread, here's information on how to do this on newer model phones: If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won't turn on or is frozen - Apple Support

Note that the procedure is different for iPhone 7/7 Plus and different again for 8/8 Plus:

  • On an iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus: Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Then press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Finally, press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo.
  • On an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus: Press and hold both the Side and Volume Down buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
  • On an iPhone 6s and earlier, iPad, or iPod touch: Press and hold both the Home and the Top (or Side) buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.

Same problem as jojomoore except it's doing it on a 2 month old battery. Tried the old battery and same problem: battery icon with sliver of red and nothing else. If I un-plug the phone I get the 'plug' icon so it's recognizing that it's plugged in. Tried multiple power sources, plugs and cables. iTunes doesn't recognize it... The last two days of use the phone was stuck at 20% battery then the following day 1% battery. I shut it off, plugged it in and it's never come back on. I have a strong suspicion the phone is toast.
