Q: Java and runescape - I know this has been touched on before

Hey so I'm not very good with computers but I'll attempt to explain the situation.  I am on a Mac OS x 10.5.8 and the Javas I have available in my preferences are: Java SE 6 ; J2SE 5.0; J2SE 5.0; J2SE 1.4.2 in that order with only the SE 6 version checked.  I have done a variety of trouble shooting seen in my other thread https://discussions.apple.com/message/16865411#16865411

 

However, I have tried to redo some of these steps and for instance now I can't even get to the java test page because the browser just freezes and I have to force quit.  A few months ago I was able to use the www.runescape.com website perfectly fine and I don't remember making any changes that would affect this, but now when I go to load the game it says your version of Java is unavailable or old.  However, no new software update for Java is in my update search off the apple icon.  I don't think my problem is directly to the game developers with the website because more recently I was using a chemistry site for school that requires JAVA on an OWL school site and now any learning activities that use JAVA I can't do.. In September I had no problem with this site and then somewhere along the line in October November it stopped working.

 

So to summarize, I want to try and be able to play runescape but because this other site that uses Java was working and then also stopped working, giving the same message as old or unavailable, I think my problem is with JAVA not a specific site.

Wow.  Thank you so much.  I haven't played in a while so I missed that news item.  You're a godsend lorian, you were also correct about the OWL site.  Now I can game and learn...

    Have you tried deleting Java cache files?

     

     

    Open Java Preferences /Applications/Utilities

     

    Then select the Network tab.

     

    Click Delete Files

     

    Now empty the Safari cache also.

     

    Restart your Mac.

     

    Also, you could try an Archive & Install for 10.5

    That installs a fresh System Folder for you...

    Thanks for the response.  I believe I have done that already but I will try it again.  I don't have my Mac OS X disk to reinstall at the moment but would I need to make sure I have all my documents backed up on an external harddrive first?

    Didn't work, got the error message: The page “RuneScape - MMORPG - The No.1 Free Online Multiplayer Game” attempted to load Java content, but Java is unavailable or not installed.

     

    I will try archiving and reinstallation if you let me know if I need an external harddrive?

    Just to make sure, go to Safari > Preferences - Security

     

    Java is enabled right?

     

    You'll need an external drive in order to backup your data or burn to CD's if you can.

     

    Photos, documents, music... etc.

    Yes, Java is enabled.

     

    I'll try and do a reinstallation this weekend and post back the results.

    Hi Kdowns19,

     

    I'm in the RuneScape Tech Support forum a lot. Other people with similar problems have posted there recently. I may be able to help you sort out the problems you're having with RuneScape. In your other thread I think Linc Davis was on the right track.

     

    Apple stopped releasing updates for OS X 10.5.8 a while ago. Trying to play RuneScape through your web browser won't work anymore. Your Mac has 32 bit web browsers which will try to use 32 bit Java to start RuneScape. A few months ago Jagex changed the requirements for RuneScape. It was announced in the news section on their site that you now need at least Java 6 (also known as 1.6) Update 10. The 32 bit Java on your Mac is too old to run RuneScape.

     

    There is hope. If your Mac has an Intel CPU and it is 64 bit capable then OS X 10.5.8 will have a version of 64 bit Java that is current enough for RuneScape. I read your other thread and saw that you do have 64 bit Java installed. You can play RuneScape if you download Jagex's Mac version of the RS client. The RS client will find your Mac's 64 bit version of Java and use it to run the game. You can get the Mac RS client by going to the RuneScape homepage, point your mouse at Game Info at the top to see the drop down menu, and then click on Downloads. On the next page click the download button that has an apple on it. It will download the RuneScape.dmg file. I've searched the web for a 64 bit web browser that will run in OS X 10.5.8 but I have not been able to find one.

     

    After you start the game you may need to set the graphics options in RuneScape so that the game runs in OpenGL mode. Currently there is an issue with Software mode that causes your mouse clicks to be out of alignment with the position of your mouse pointer.

     

    Also, you mentioned that the OWL school site is not longer working on your Mac. That is probably because you unchecked the other versions of Java in the Java Preferences menu. You disabled the 32 bit versions of Java on your Mac and now your 32 bit web browser can't find them when you go the OWL school site. If you go back to the Java Preferences menu and enable those other versions of Java then I'd expect that site to start working again.
