I'm putting this in here as I think it's where I'd find the people who will know a solution to my problem, if there even is one.

To keep this short, I have an iMac, a MacBook Pro and an iPhone. I'll often start a podcast at home on my iMac, listen to it on my commute with my iPhone, and then listen to it on my MacBook Pro at work. At this current moment in time I have to manually sync everything. I have to keep track of what podcasts I listened to and then delete them from whatever device they are still on. I have to set play times before I resume a podcast on another divice.

I don't want to do that.

So what are my options? I have iTunes Match/iCloud but as far as I'm aware that's not currently going to help me. When it comes to podcasts I have no particular loyalty to iTunes as long as whatever system I use requries less effort than I currently have to expell.

I've seen a few podcast managers for iOS that sync across your iOS devices, but so far nothing that syncs from iOS to iTunes (or another app) aside from iTunes itself.

To be honest, I can understand why Apple didn't inclues this in Match. It would put loads of short-term storage on their servers and just eat up bandwidth day after day after day if they did what they're doing with music. But they don't need to... Podcasts are already fully available any time anywhere online.

I just need something that tells my computer, "You are now subscribed to this podcast. Go download the lastest five episodes, you're 37 minutes into the first one."

Syncing podcasts between a Mac and an iPhone thru iTunes works exactly the way you want this to work. If you stopped before finishing, that point is synced across devices and resumes where it should. Information about when you listened, if you finished listening it, etc, is also synced. I do it all the time.

What I don't know is how you are syncing across your two Macs, but I would think home sharing would give you what you want.

They're not so much in sync as subscribed to the same podcasts. The problem comes in when I finish something elsewhere form my laptop or if I've started a podcast. I have to actively go, "OK that was minite 14, second 32... OK, 30 is close enough." and start playing. It's not a horrible thing, but it is time-consuming. It gets worse when I have to go from my laptop to my iPhone, which doesn't sync.

The whole thing is just horribly inconvenient.

"They're not so much in sync as subscribed to the same podcasts."

That's the error in your method. If you download the podcasts separately on each device, they will act as separate files. Download them on whatever device you want, but then sync them them to the other device thru iTunes. You can do the download on whatever device is handy (although I just subscribe and download on the Mac), but don't download the same podcasts on the other device, sync them.

I would go mad if I had to manually keep track of where I am in each podcast. There's no need for doing that and syncing is the key.

But I thought an iPhone couldn't sync with multiple devices?

It's iTunes that's syncing with multiple devices. That's why you have to sync back to iTunes, then sync other devices to iTunes.

I have a Mac Pro, an iPhone, an iPod and an iPad (actually had two of them for a while). Podcasts are in sync on all of them.

I'm aware how syncing to multiple iOS devices to one Mac works. In fact, were I looking to sync to an iPad, for instance, I already know exactly what software I would use to do so.

The problem is that one iOS device isn't supposed to be able to sync to multiple OS X devices. i.e. I can't sync my iPhone at home with my iMac and then sync it with my MacBook Pro when I hit the office.

I need to sync from my iMac to my iPhone... Wait thirty minutes while I go to the office... Then sync from my iPhone to my MacBook Pro. Then, at the end of the day, sync back to my iPhone... Travel home... And sync everything back to my iMac.

Yes. I don't have an iPhone, but I just got an iMac, and there doesn't seem to be a way to sync podcasts across it and my MacBook. Will Home Sharing do this?

The answer is no, Home Sharing does not. There doesn't seem to be a way to do this.
