Need to find a new Monitor for my Power Mac G4.

My Power Mac G4 is old with old software but it works just fine for me. The specs for those who care and need them:

Hardware Overview:

Machine Name: Power Mac G4

Machine Model:PowerMac3,3

CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.7)

Number Of CPUs: 1

CPU Speed: 450 MHz

L2 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB

Memory: 1.5 GB

Bus Speed: 100 MHz

Boot ROM Version: 4.2.8f1

My monitor screen though, is starting to crackle, have trouble starting, & fade and come back. This is the problem. The monitor:

Apply Studio Display

Chipset Model:

ATY,Rage128Pro:

Now, I printed an article from the Apple website called "Power Mac G4 Display Compatibility" showing pictures of the monitor ports. The computer and the monitor were a gift. Current monitor is connected to a VGA port but there also is a ADC port in the back (which I matched the available ports to the photograph from the website, and there are no DCI ports of either sort!) So I then matched the port type to the chart including all the Apple Monitors and most of them will work if connected with the proper adapter & video/graphics card is installed.

So, I need to shop for a new Monitor:

1) where in Houston should I physically go?

2) should I only look for apple products? are there any good non-apple alternatives?

3) how do I match other brands with my PowerPC G4?

Much Thanks to anyone who can help,

Bob

You may use most any make of monitor that connects by VGA or DVI, the latter being facilitated by using an ADC to DVI adapter.

The Rage has limits on resolution, so one should avoid larger than 20", and keep with 16:10 ratio if possible, 4:3 also being aceptable.

16:9 monitors will have minimal resolution support with the Rage.

Acer, Samsung, Dell, and others, all make monitors that are useable, so there is no restriction to Apple monitors.

Namer brand monitors are available at any PC outlet store.

Another option is to shop Craiglist or eBay and get an Apple ADC LCD monitor for real cheap.

Using the "Yellow pages" look for computer recycling and sales stores, CRT's galore and Flat Screens are readily available at very reasonable prices. ... i have all used crt's, Sony, Mitsubishi, ViewSonic, all I've had for more than 5 yrs., some 10 yrs., all working perfectly still, and I paid between $35 and $75 each, depnding on age at time of purchase and size of screen (17' & 19" typical for me), flat screens run higher, if you don't have the space for a CRT. .... Most all CRT's will fit the Rage 128 without any adapters too.

I have been looking around for one of these ADC displays. The small ones <17-inch are pretty cheap, but the 23-inch models have asking prices around $200 ("...was $3000 when purchased new..." most of the ads say.) I am still waiting for them to get cheaper.

Hi Bob,

but the 23-inch models have asking prices around $200

Those still pull a premium around here as well.

I picked up a 17" for a song (connected it to my daughters machine), but the 23" still get the money.

4:3 vs 16:10 real estate is the reason I'd say.

However, you can't drive a 23" (or a 20" for that matter) with the Rage, so it's not an issue in this case......

A good 17" is sure pretty, though!
