Safari - Clear Cache

Whenever I attempt to clear the cache (by selecting Safari - Empty Cache from the menu) Safari freezes and I am obliged to force quit.

I am using version 5.1.2 with OS X 10.7.2. Any suggestions?

How long do you wait before giving up and force quitting?

Sometimes I get the spinning beachball of death for a moment or two, but it eventuallly goes away on its own.

I used to clear the cache all the time to preserve RAM, but now it seems that clearing the cache does not really free up much RAM and I only do it occasionally.
