There is no way to determine going only by serial number whether or not an iPad is new or refurbished. From where did you buy this iPad?

Where did you buy it? The box should be maked Refurbished.
Look at this link http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/apple_certified.html
It says
is given a new refurbished part number and serial number.
A new iPad 2 has one of these part numbers. I believe yours is the A1395.
Here's the model numbers of the various iPads.
Look on the back of yours.
iPadWi-Fi/3G/A-GPS(Original) A1337
iPad2(Wi-Fi/GSM/A-GPS) A1396 (Verizon)
iPad2(Wi-Fi/CDMA/A-GPS) A1397 (AT&T)
Cheers, Tom 😉
It's A1395, thank you.
I recently purchased a refurb iPad 2 through Amazon. The model number is MC980LL. How can I tell if this is still covered under the original warranty? I want to purchase Apple Care but if it is out of warranty Apple Care does not cover it.
Thanks.
Don

Note that you cannot get a factory-refurbished iPad from anyone other than Apple. Unless you just used the "pass through" link from Amazon to the Apple Store, the "refurbished" iPads sold through Amazon come from private companies and are not refurbished by Apple. You may already be aware of this, but I wanted to make sure.
Regards.
Thanks, Dave. I was aware of that when I made the purchase, looking for a discount to fit my budget. Thank you for the link. I was able to purchase the Apple Care plan for this iPad.
All iPad 2's are less than a year old (until next month).
Looks like I'm good until September 2013. Thanks for all your help, fellers.

You can see the model number in Settings>General>About>Model. The model number has a two-letter code, a number and some more letters. The last part stands for the country/region. The first letter can be "F" (refurbished), "M" (normal retail), or "P" (personalized / engraved). For example MC605B is the model MC605 and B is for the region.
Cheers, Tom 😉
