Why are my messages being sent as text messages rather than iMessages to other iPhones?

I just got an iPhone 4s through Sprint (my wife also did). For some reason when I send her or other iPhones messages, they are being sent as "text messages." However, when she messages with other iPhones, they get sent as iMessages. We are both on the same account....I changed mobile numbers to iPhone and thought this would solve my problem, but didn't. Any help/thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks!

Did you turn it on? (Settings/ Messages/ iMessage/ ON)

Thanks! But...yes, it is turned on. Thanks for your reply...I didn't even know to check that!! Any other ideas??

Tjmoo, did you find out the answer to your question? If so, will you share? I am having an issue where some of my messages to iPhone users go through as iMessages while others go through as text messages. I am not sure why this is because the people I am sending them to have iPhones.

iMessage only works if both devices have iOS 5 (and if iMessage is turned ON). It won't work with a non-iOS device or if Apple's iMessage servers are unavailable. Are you sending to iPhones that have iOS 5?

thanks so much. I talked to apple and att today, they both said it was server related. I following your steps, turned on messaging and its working.
