If you have some sort of material on the iPod that you can't get off with just a dry cloth, then you can use a damp - and by "damp" I really do mean damp; if you can squeeze any water out if it, it's too wet - cloth for just that material. It will be up to you to make sure that no liquid gets into the iPod.
