Lion 10.7.2 Constantly Freezing Crashing on MacBook Pro

I am at my wits end! My MacBook Pro (MacBookPro2,2 2006) is constantly crashing and/or freezing. Everything was perfectly fine until I installed the 10.7.2 update. Then things started to get progressively worse. Now I can't go 15 minutes without the system freezing up or crashing. It crashes 20 times a day or more and is completely unusable at this point. I really need to get work done and don't know what else to do.

It doesn't seem to matter what applications are open. I thought at first maybe it was Safari or Mail but I've had it hang or crash with just the Finder open. Sometimes it just freezes up yet, if iTunes is playing music, the music will continue to play in the background but you can't interact with anything. Sometimes the mouse pointer will still move and sometimes it won't. Sometimes I'll get the spinning beachball of death. Other times it will just instantly restart on its own. A couple times the screen just rolled to grey then died. I never get a crash report that I can post or send to Apple.

I am very technically proficient and have done absolutely everything I can think of at this point including:

* Resetting PRAM.
* Repairing disk permissions and running a disk check
* Ran TechToolPro and everything came back OK.
* Updated all software and removed any weird kernal extensions.
* Unhooked any attached peripherals.
* Tried different networks or switching to wired ethernet.
* Logged in with Shift key down so no extra software loaded.

The ONLY thing that seems to work is starting up in Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key at boot. Which is what led me to think that maybe some rogue kernal extensions were to blame but I removed all but the blessed Apple extensions. Safe Mode loads only the most basic system software so is not very usable. The fact that it runs OK here makes me believe it must be a bug in Apples 10.7.2 update but who knoes what part since so much of the OS is not loaded in Safe Mode.

I've also tried running Apple Hardware Tests (AHT) but can't get it to run for the life of me. I followed another postwhere we copy the .diagnostics folder into /System/Library/CoreServices from the original software discs that came with the computer but holding down the "D" key on startup still doesn't invoke the tests. Won't run off the CD either. I get some weird circle with a slash through it. Going to take it in to the Genius Bar tomorrow and have them run the hardware tests. I'll report back after but I don't feel too sure they're going to have a good answer.

A side issue now is that, after all this, my MacBook Pro takes over half an hour to boot each time. It appears to be doing a Safe Boot no matter what even though I don't hold down the Shift key at startup. I always get the progress bar under the Apple logo and I think it is doing a fschk each time. But when it finally comes up it's not actually in Safe Boot mode. It never used to do this and I can't get it to stop. With all the crashes and now this incredibly long startup each time I'm about to throw this thing out the window.

I've read hundreds of other posts across the Internet with like experiences but no good answers. A lot of people seem to think it is an Nvidia graphics card related issue or a discrete graphics issue but my older machine doesn't have swithable graphics and it's card is ATI. But I do sometimes get strange graphic artifacts on the screen before it crashes and some Apps have lines through their interfaces so I'm wondering if the latest system update screwed up graphics drivers?

I'm posting here in the hopes that someone, anyone, can help me!!! I think Lion 10.7.2 has serious bugs and is one of the worst updates Apple has ever released.

Is anyone else having similar problems and does anyone out there have a solution?!!

More info...

Don't know why the diagnostics don't kick in when the "D" key is held down but I imagine it's related to the portion of my post where the progress bar comes up every time on boot for half an hour. It is doing a fschk because there probably is directory or partition damage and it probably ignores the "D" key.

I'm sure this is a side effect of all the crashes I've had lately as it didn't originally do an fschk each time when all the problems started. But to make sure directory damage wasn't the cause of the problem I went ahead and wiped the entire drive, reinstalled the whole OS, apps, and... same !@#$% problem this morning! Goes to all black screen and then hangs. I have to force restart again.

I did manage to find and download the Apple Service Diagnostic disc and ran that. Performed 10 loops of tests overnight and everything came back perfect so I really don't think hardware or memory is to blame. I have the latest firmware installed for my machine. Again, my machine is about 6 years old at this point. Lion isn't the snappiest but still ran perfectly fine under 10.7.1. I am more and more convinced that 10.7.2 is the problem. Everything started going south after this update.

At this point I am at a complete loss. I'm just praying that the imminent release of 10.7.3 will fix these problems. UGH!

FINALLY got Lion to produce a crash report during one of these disasters. Like my gut was telling me this seems graphics driver related. Here it is:

Nothing yet on my end. I did reinstall the 10.7.2 Combo update and have been running the last couple days without a crash (dare I say it!). You might try the same. But I'm still getting weird streaks of pixels in the interfaces of apps randomly. I still believe something happened with graphics in the 10.7.2 update. Waiting and waiting and waiting for 10.7.3. Hope it will fix these issues!

OK. The 10.7.2 Combo update seemed to make things better at first but now I'm back to constant crashes. All kinds of weird artifacts and mis-draws happening on screen in windows before it crashes. I am convinced something happened to the graphics drivers in 10.7.2. Nothing more I can do. 10.7.3 better come soon and it better fix things.

Yeah, I got a loaner (newer MacBook Pro) and transfered my backup over to it. No problems at all. Then I just had to give it back last week so I transfered everything back to my old machine and now I'm back to freezing/crashing every few minutes. I just don't think the older machines have been fully qualified to run Lion. Apple has abandoned us. I'm going to by a new machine but waiting (and waiting... and...) for the new MBPs to come out. Any day now. If you want to keep your old machine I would suggest going back to Snow Leopard. I had no problems with it. In my opinion, Lion has been the worst OS release in recent memory from Apple!
