What use is 'Save a Version'?

Saving Page doc as a Word doc via Export and icon works. But the drop down option called Save a Version implies I should also be able to save to a different version (eg Word) through that route. What happens is that I get nothing at all on selecting 'Save a Version'. What is Save a Version for and what should I be doing to be able to activate it?

Here, "version" refers to a process of editing and/or revision - where you have different/evolving versions of a document.

In a nutshell: "Save a version" = "Save".
