setting up Logic audio with Pro Tools hardware?

Hi all,

Fairly new Logic user, longtime Pro Tools HD user. I'm trying to get Logic 9 to work with a Digidesign 192 interface (usually used with Pro Tools HD and PT 8). According to Logic's TDM manual the Audio preferences tab should have panes for "DAE" and "Direct TDM", but.... all it's offering me is just the choice of "Core Audio." I'd like to take advantage of the 192 interfaces 16 inputs and at least 2 outputs, but can't seem to get it happening. Any ideas as to what's missing?

Thanks much!

Tom

You are missing, that Avid canceled support for Direct TDM/DAE: http://avid.custkb.com/avid/app/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=363063

Avid end of support announcement: Logic Audio and Digital Performer in DAE mode with Pro Tools|HD

Pro Tools HD 8.0.3 Software (released December 15, 2009) and future versions will no longer support or be qualified with Apple's Logic Audio or Motu's Digital Performer running in DAE mode. Users of both applications can still take advantage of Pro Tools CoreAudio drivers and use the Pro Tools|HD system as a hardware I/O.

Clearly there is a love Hate relationship between these 2 Companies Apple and Avid, actually more Hate than love. I personally upset at both of them because they aren't not thinking of the consumer at all when behaving this way. I believe both platforms are hurt because after all Apple has the operating system and Avid has the great sounding hardware and software. Currently even with the avid core audio driver your 192 or mbox pro will not properly allow digital input and output usage when running in Logic or quicktime nor garageband. The sound is so low bit rate and sounds horrible. But funny enough if I open Ableton Live a third party software you'll see full input and output sets including digital spdif in and out and it sounds amazing!!. Isn't that just Nuts makes it so obvious that apple software doesn't want to play nice with avid or Avid doesn't want to play nice with Apple Software. I have been using Logic since version 2.6, thats right version 2.6 thats before apple bought it from emagic and back then emagic and digidesign avid work together like they were made for each other but ever since apple bought Logic its been down hill ! Most of the original programmers left and are no longer working for apple no surprise why the updates have slow down immensely. Its rumored that the original Logic programmers developed Presonus StudioOne which makes a lot of sense to me because studio one looks and feels like Logic with super cool updated features that would have made perfect sense as a Logic 10 update. I don't want to leave Logic pro but really this is crazy how difficult it has become. Like why is apple so slow with features and update. My point to all this is apple needs to be the bigger person here and play nice with everyone. Apple has the platform which we all work from, they can afford to make these third party developers feel welcome and at home which would serve well to the consumer.

Hi!

I'm just about to build up a small studio, not like a pro one but also not like a home recording studio. Im seeking for a DSP based system.... So what do you think is a good alternative setup to run logic 9 with? Thanks!

You are spreading really weird wrong rumors here:

  • This is not an Apple <=> Avid thing, this is an Avid thing only: every 3rd party app for lost TDM support because of Avids decision, one other prominent example is MOTUs Digital Performer.
  • Logic always support CoreAudio drivers and it works with any CoreAudio compatible hardware, which there are MANY MANY! It is not Apples responsibility to provide working CoreAudio drivers for custom hardware, Apple however does support drivers for class compliant USB and FireWire devices, which then work without any custom driver.
  • And no, nobody from the Emagic software engineers went to Presonus. I think one went to celemony, the rest is still there.

Your Right on several points Blueberry. On the Issue of Avid and Apple Granted that Avid has much of the blame here. There are so many rumors running around and I dont want to be spreading any myself so I will refeain from doing so. I will try to wait patiently to see what Apple does with Logic Pro although I fear Apple will continue to push Garage band and kill logic because the professional logic user just isnt a money maker for them.

Hi Gido90 I think the UAD Apollo Quad is a great Unit for Home or pro users alike. It has its own Quad DSP chips to run plug ins and or track with. UAD has a great plug ins packages that sound really Good and wont tax your computers CPU. Beacuse its Firewire you can run it on a IMac or Laptop. I Put a system together for a client and it really sounds good. Take care.

FAct is blue Logic and pro Users account for a smal smal margin of revenue Finalcut pro was once considered a professional platform but now Finalcut X its more of a glorified imovie with out some of the key pro features. I think Logic pro is heading in that direction. I have been told Top Muisc retailers Guitar center and Samash and others that Apple is asking them to push Garage band and teach garage band at store presentations which makes sence since its all about the iPad now and Iphone.

Thank you for your advice! I read some articels about the apollo and it must be great. Probably I'll go for that one 😉 But doesn't a firewire affect latency negatively in some cases?

Apr 15, 2012 6:58 AM in response to Community User

gido90 the firewire and USB can effect latency but if you have a small mixer you can monitor your inputs with no latency and thats why UAD Apollo has a vertual Mixer, similar to apogee Ensembly. These virtual mixer allow you to montor your mic or instruments with out dealing with latency. Also with the Apollo you can monitor input and add affects like reverb or delay.
