So I have an ATV2 which seems to work well. I can't find any documentation as to where it gets the photos that are displayed while the screen is idle, say while playing music. This is probably a stupid question but I can't figure it out. I'd appreciate any help or pointers.

Settings > screensaver.
You can choose the photos used in the screensaver. To add photos of your own you need to add photos to the Apple TV from iTunes > advanced.
