powermac g5 memory upgrade?

i have an powermac g5(early 2005) and i have 4 available memory slots(2 pairs). the memory slots came with 256 mb cards. I just bought a 2 pack of 1 gb memory cards which meet the requirements but when i took out 1 pair and put in the new one the computer would not boot up(1 pair of 1gb and 1 pair of 256 mb). Do i have to have all of the same kind? Any info would help.

PowerMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

You don't have to have all the same size pairs, just two pair consisting of 1 pair each size.

The memory needs to be installed, in pairs, from the inside out; 2-1 1-2 or 4-3-2-1 1-2-3-4 depending on the G5 model.

Make sure the memory is completely seated.

Even if the memory is of a similar specification, if the memory is not "guaranteed Mac compatible" that could be a reason to not function.

RAM needs to contain some specific information for PPC machines.

PC "value RAM" rarely works in a Mac.

You need to have a pair of DIMMs in the innermost slots.

If you didn't, that is likely why it wouldn't boot.

With a pair of old DIMMs in the inside slots, the machine should boot with or without RAM in the outer slots.

Most often, with incompatible RAM, beeps will be heard at startup, or, the new memory won't report.

Does anyone know why this memory wont work.

If the memory does not have the proper programming in the EEPROM, it will either not show up or misreport.

If the voltage is wrong, it will not show up or it will prevent boot.

If the spec is wrong, it will not show up, prevent boot or misreport.

I'd say that the RAM is simply NOT Mac compatible.

Macs are more specific in RAM requirements due to firmware conditions programmed by Apple.

Most PC/DeskTop RAM will not work in a G5.
