if you have no idea what genlock is then why do you think you need to hook it up?
genlock is reference (sync, black burst) and it syncronizes devices to the same time. if you have a sync generator then hook a cable up to the reference in on the beta machine.

I've always worked with DV. College never tought me beta stuff. I'm learning as i go. I just got a capture card for beta. The capture card says i need to hook up the genlock cable but it didn't say what to hook it up to. not too helpful for someone like me.
reference isn't exclusive to the beta format. if you really want to learn about sync and other engineering minutia, bernard grob penned a great book titled, "Basic Television and Video Systems." it's sure to cure even the most stubborn case of insomnia but it's chock full of great and pertinant information.
also look at these websites for more engineering tidbits.
No, I don't think he needs to read up on engineering stuff like that. All he needs to know that decks, when not connected via firewire, need genlock. And that genlock provides sync.
Well, if it didn't work, then I'd Genlock it. Generally, if a deck comes in that has a REF IN connection, I connect it to my black burst generator.
I'm the creative type...not an engineer. The fact that I know so much about FCP, and Avid, is due to working with them. If I had to manage decks all day long I imagine I'd read up more on them.
