Use the iPad as a GPS device

I have the original iPad and a Verizon mifi card. I am getting ready to mount the iPad to my car dashboard to use as a GPS device. I dont understand why the ipad wont work as a GPS device when paired with the mifi card that I am already paying 50.00 a month for. Is there any way to make this work or do I have to upgrade my Ipad?

The iPad's GPS capability is independent of the MiFi, but all it does is allow the iPad to determine its location. To usethat location info, you need an app. The built-in Maps app works as a way to show where you are, but you need the MiFi connection to download the map images. There are other GPS apps that will do a more sophisiticated job than Maps.

If what you really want is turn-by-turn navigation (like sat nav) you need to buy one of the specialits apps like TomTom or Navigon.

You will also need an iPad with s GPS sensor - this means a model with 3g capability. Without the GPS sensor, the iPad's location service uses, in Apple's words, "crowd-sourced Wi-Fi hotspot locations to determine your approximate location". It will not work in a moving vehicle driving through areas without Wi-Fi hotspots.

As you are using a mifi card, I suspect your iPad is a wi-fi only model in which case you are out of luck.
