Internet sharing can't be disabled

On my mid-2011 Macbook Pro running 10.7.2, I recently shared internet from ethernet to wifi. When finished, I disabled internet sharing.

Whenever my MBP wakes from sleep, the airport software believes sharing is still enabled:

When I select the network name, an error message is displayed:

The software then reverts to its normal icon and behavior.

The same thing also occurs whenever I disable and reenable wifi.

I've tried toggling internet sharing again, as well as switching to different types of sharing (eg, wifi to bluetooth), but nothing has worked.

My searches haven't turned up any similar issues. Has anyone else experienced this?

Edit: no ethernet cable is currently connected.

yep. I have noticed the same. You always have to remember to shut down the sharing before you close the mac or unplug the ethernet cable. And most of the time you dont remember :/ It's so #!%?! frustrating to boot the whole system because of that! This happened with the Snow leopard as well. And still continues to happen on Lion.

Pleace god make Apple fix this! Its a small thing but it makes me hate my macbook pro (and my self for paying over 2500€ of it) every time when it happens.

Exactly the same here - when I just close the lid of my macbook pro and unplug the Ethernet cable right after that, then it is pretty hard to disable sharing when I open the lid. And of course it cannot connect to wifi hotspots like that as the wifi is set to create a hotspot, not to connect to one. The only two workarounds I have found so far:

1. Reboot -- But that's a Microsoft solution and that's one of the reason switching to Mac, right?

2. Plug an active Ethernet cable, re-enable sharing, then disable it, and by hope and pray it will be disabled -- then you can unplug the Ethernel cable...

I hope fix will be issues soon as this is pretty annoying to be honest.

I had this problem and tried all sorts of methods to fix it. In the end what worked was typing this in terminal:

sudo ifconfig en1 down

sudo ifconfig en1 up

(Where en1 is the interface of the Wi-Fi on your Mac - if you don't know, then you check the mac address of the Wi-Fi interface by going to System Preferences => Network, make sure Wifi is selected, then click the Advanced button and the mac address is the "Wi-Fi Address" at the bottom of the first tab. Then go to terminal and type "sudo ifconfig" - you will see the names of each of the interfaces and their mac (hardware) addresses.
