I use to own a PC and after several years of use it filled up with memory and the processor slowed down to a point where the computer was unusable. What is the best way to keep my macbook pro clean and running well preventing problems such as that with the PC?

Just use it. There is no maintenance required on your part, & most the the apps out that that "claim" to do this for OS X actually muck things up, so stay away from that stuff. OS X takes care of itself.
Oh, and don't even think about installing any Anti-Virus software, most of that stuff is nothing more than malware itself.
Just to add some details to wjosten's response, so the OP knows te "enemy" better:
Avoid MacKeeper and MacDefender, at the very least. If you watch the forums enough, you will see posts about someone who left MacKeeper "clean" the system, and entire photo libraries were deemed virus and were deleted.
#1 - NEVER eat or drink while using your MBP. Food particles and especially liquids can cause "costly" havoc if trapped inside.
