Mac won't resume from sleep - black screen

Hi, I've been having this issue for the last month or so and it seems to be getting worse. I close the lid on my MBP to put it to sleep fairly regularly, but when I open the lid to resume the disk drive spins up and makes the usual noises, but the screen does not come on. I can move the mouse, type on the keyboard, close the lid and open it again, etc. but to no avail. I have to hold down the power button to do a manual restart. Sometimes on the restart it resumes my system state somehow (it loads on a pale blue screen that I had never seen before). But sometimes even this fails to load and I have to hold the button again and make it really do a reboot. Any idea what the problem could be? This doesn't happen every time either, I'd say every 3-4 times. I installed Lion about 6 months ago, and I'm not running any different software than before.

Are there any hardware reports I should post that would help diagnose this? I'm fairly tech savvy, so I should be able to do anything that can actually be done from my side of the machine.

Try Brightness/F2 key. Some times it works. Hope the next update will help.

I've been having the same problem ever since I installed Lion. Also, Macbook Pro is freezing up, expecially when using iPhoto.

If you are still under warranty or have Apple Care did you give them a call?

MacBook Pro: Distorted video or no video issues. The affected computers were manufactured between approximately May 2007 and September 2008. Check to see if you qualify.

Hi all,

Your problems are probably due to a badly installed operating system. Therefore I recommend to reinstall Lion.

To do this, simply hold the "alt" button when you start your computer.

I just tried the screen brightness key and that didn't work, no response at all.

Sadly my warranty has long since expired and I don't have the specific faulty graphics board. My computer is from July of 2009, right after they released the new models. Are there any similar issues for the NVidia 9400M?

No. Search Apple's Knowledge Base to confirm. It appears you have no other recourse but to take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP. Whichever is more convenient for you.

Similar issue to Adam's post.

My MacBook Pro is (according to About This Mac) 15-inch, Mid 2009, with NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB. I hit similar issues. The laptop does not resume when I open the lid, or press shift or or enter, etc. It does not resume even when I press the power button (briefly). I'm running 10.7.4 Mac OS X Lion. I have to hold the power key to power it down (it is definitely "on", just no picture, since the screen flashes as it shuts down, etc. Then power up and it is fine, with a charge like 93%.

I've noticed that often when this issue happens, one of my RAM sticks is no longer recognized. Next time you have this, try going to system information and see if all of your RAM is there. It doesn't happen every time, just sometimes.
