Is there an internal blu-ray drive for macbook pro yet?

Hi, I have searched the communities to find out if I can get a Blu-ray drive for my MBP running Lion, but I only keep finding articles about very creative workarounds.

I just want an internal drive that will play my movies like it is supposed to. Does one exist? If so, is it something I can get done at apple? or does it have to be installed 3rd party?

Would love it if someone could help. I love my MBP but this is really getting old.

Perhaps it was true that there was no internal bluray drive for any mac available in 2012 when this post and your reply was made, but that is no longer true. Other World Computing(MacSales.com) sells several internal bluray drives, for several different mac computers. Unfortunately, I cannot seem to find one that will surely work with my Mid-2012 MacBook Pro. I bought an internal bluray drive from there, originally intending for it to go into my Mid-2010 Mac Mini, but I was taking my MacBook Pro apart to upgrade the hard drive, and thought I might rather have the bluray drive in my portable MacBook Pro, rather than my Mac Mini. Alas, it would not work. I have been looking to find if there is one available for my MacBook Pro, and cannot find one(OWC sells ones for MANY Apple computers, but, oddly, not for my exact model and year of MacBook).

For the record, it is foolish to believe that you "cannot get a virus on Mac," as viruses can target ANY operating system. Regardless of your operating system, it is important to pay attention to where you are going and what you are clicking on, and it is IMPERATIVE that you have Antivirus software installed and running on your computer. I, myself, love Macs, and would rather always buy Macs, but they are expensive. Windows is also often necessary for certain software/game titles. Do not, however, delude yourself into thinking that Macs are not susceptible to viruses.

I find this hard to believe. I have just brought a slot loading internal Panasonic Blu Ray drive for my mid 2010 Mac Mini. Will be doing the upgrade this weekend.

Will keep you posted on how it goes!

And surely VLC will play blu ray discs? It plays everything else!!!

Oh, sure, it will fit in there. Heck, the system may even recognize for what it is. But with luck, DVD Player will let you watch a DVD, after you have regionalized it. Blu-Ray? Just a round piece of plastic, as far as the OS is concerned.

VLC? Haven't you heard? The entertainment cabal finally managed to emasculate it. Now it won't even do out of region DVDs, much less Blu's

Mmmm, the Mac Mini i brought with the slot loader on ebay did not work some of the cables were frayed off the motherboard, repairable, but it would have cost a small fortune, so........... i sent it back, got a refund 🙂 and brought a new one from apple (without the slot load) i also brought a Samdung (LOL) external blu ray drive, which i have to say, works very well. After searching around on the web i found a program capable of ripping blurays for free and only for back up of course (cant remember what it was called, at work @ the moment - will update later) then just drag and drop them into VLC after ripping (MKV) and hey presto it works.

Okay so I installed this blu-ray slot load drive:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/12-7mm-Slot-in-load-SATA-Blu-ray-burner-player-Drive-App le-iMac-Dell-XPS-Studio-/180627865716?pt=PCC_Drives_Storage_Internal&hash=item2a 0e428074

into my 2010 Mac Mini and all is running fine. You have to remove the bezel off the front of the new bluray drive but it just clips off, so dead easy.

It's working great with VLC and Mac Blu-ray player, which for about $50 is a great peice of software if youplan to watch your blu-rays on your Mac.
