Now I have to thumb through album squares animation. I have a play/pause button @ bottom left and an 'i' button at bottom right that lets me view album details. How do I get rid of this and go back to regular view and sorting? Any help is appreciated.

You must be holding your iPhone sideways. That is the view for landscape.
If you are holding your phone horizontally and it is still at this view it must be frozen. Double-click the Home Button to open multitasking. hold down the iPod widget until it starts to wiggle, then press the ➖ button on it.
