I don't think you can go wrong with any of the ones mentioned. Perhaps you should perform a benefit analysis of dollars per GB of storage in making your decision.
Apologies for a bit of a sidetrack on your post. It happens from time to time.
Ciao.
so would the Samsung SpinPoint M8 1 TB - 300 MBps - 5400 rpm be the best to get?
Or this one Samsung HN-M101MBB 1000GB 2.5in Spinpoint M8 SATA 5400RPM 8MB Notebook HDD - OEM they seem to be cheaper then the 750gb I was looking at
I have no idea which of the many 1tb drives is 'best' but Samsung is a brand with an excellent track record so I can't say that it is not the best.
Go to www.macsales.com and get their suggestions for 1tb drives to be used in an MBP, then pick one.
Here is Storagereview's list of the top 2.5" sata drives.
If you are after the fastest drive, then, you need to look as SSD drives.
The fastest mechanical drive is the Seagate Momentus XT 750gb, a hybrid drive which uses 8GB SLC RAM as cache.
Next in line are the conventional 7200rpm drives, including the Seagate Momentus 750gb, Western Digital Scorpio Black 750gb and Hitachi Travelstar 750gb. All these drives will work in your MacBook Pro.
Bottom on the food chain are the 1tb drives from Western Digital and Samsung. I guess most users prefer speed to capacity.
Ha, even more confusing! To tell you the truth I was planing on getting the Momentus XT myself until I read this thread. CSound's theory is interesting although unless I see it documented, i'm still skeptical.

Google is your friend there, and Wikipedia have more info on Areal Density than you want to read.
FYI, I use and have used the Momentus XT (500G) since it came out, troublefree and fairly fast.
That's an old thread.
Yes, some Mac users did have issues with the Seagate Momentus XT1.
Seagate appears to have resolved these problems in the Momentus XT2.
I'm also considering purchasing the Seagate Momentus 750gb XT2 while I wait for SSD prices to come down.
So this would be the best drive to get Seagate Momentus XT ST750LX003 2.5" internal hard drive - 750 GB + 8 GB SSD memory from Seagate?

That link does not go anywhere, please copy/paste whatever it was you intended us to see
It may be the fastest of its size, slower than a pure SSD but cheaper than 750G of SSD storage. Please note that it is 750G, not 758 (750 + 8).
I have several of the Momentus XT 500G (inc 4G SSD) and they are a little faster than the mechanical drives on which they are based, not a lot, a little. Repetitive actions (boot up/opening the same applications etc) benefit most, but I rarely reboot (why waste the time) and once I open an application it tends to stay open.
Just to add to the confusion, if you don't use your optical drive, I would put a SSD drive in the optical bay using a carrier, either a Datadoubler or Optibay.
You can move the OSX System and applications to the SSD and keep your User Accounts on the internal hard drive.
Just a thought.
This is what your link leads to:

2.5" Notebook Hard Drives
Hybrid Hard Drives - Seagate is the first to re-enter the hybrid hard drive space with the Momentus XT
. The drive comes in capacities up to 500GB and beats out all other notebook drives (the VeoliRaptor too for that matter) in our real world tests, where the drive is able to effectively use it's extra 4GB flash storage. The 500GB model runs roughly $130, an excellent value for top-line performance.
Performance - In all of our testing, one notebook drive continues to rise to the top - the Western Digital Scorpio Black. After two years, the 320GB Scorpio Black is still a great drive, bested only by the recent release of it's bigger brother, the 500GB Scorpio Black
.
High Capacity - The Western Digital Scorio Blue
and Samsung SpinPoint M8 hold the spot as best high-capacity 2.5-inch drives. Offering the 9.5mm drive height standard to almost all notebooks, these models offer 1TB capacities with great compatiblity. Recently even 7200RPM performance models have reached as high as 750GB, such as the 750GB Seagate Momentus.

Other than all the misspellings and the fact that it is sadly out of date, where exactly does it say that the 1Tb 5400 rpm drives are not as fast as the 500Gb 7200 rpm drives (here's a hint, it doesn't)
