I need to remove it to apply a screen/back protector, but it seems impossible to get off.

Uh, why are you posting this here? I don't think everyone here has an iPhone 4S, and only a small percentage of people who have the 4S has that specific case. Try emailing the people at CaseMate.
Hi @cclloyd, to remove the Barely There Brushed Aluminum case, you will want to run your fingers/finger nails along the left side of the case (where the volume buttons are located) and press down. The case should then pop off easily. (See photo)
