I just noticed that my iphone will not notify me whenever I get an email. It is not until I open the email app until my mail updates and tells me I have unread mail. I even turned on the Badge App Icon am I doing something wrong? I am using the iphone 4.
I didn't exactly what you said, went to mail, contracts, calendar but I didn't see anywhere where it said 'fetch new data' and I really need my emails to notify me because I'm getting scholarships for college
I had the same problem with my iPhone 5s. It's because I had selected "manual" in the Fetch New Data screen. Go to "settings", "mail", and "accounts". At the bottom of the "accounts" screen, click on "fetch new data". At the top of the "fetch new data" screen, turn on "push"; AND, at the bottom of the "fetch new data" screen, choose the frequency you desire (15 min, 30 min, hourly, or manually). NOTE: if you choose manually, your mail will only be fetched when you open your mail app; but, it also saves battery power.
Sounds like you have your mail set to fetch new mail manually. Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Fetch New Data and check what you have set.
same problem for me too. No matter what Ihave tried emails arent pushed or fetched without doing it automatically.
same here guys before i went on holiday my iphone just made that beeping sound when i recieved new email and when i came back i noticed that it doesnt do that any more and i have to open the mail app for the mail to load and then it makes the beeping sound i did not change anything so i dont know why it doesnt notify me know, any ideas on what i can do to fix that anyone?
I had the same problem when I bought my new Iphone 5s, but I found this link and it helped me set up my email so I would get an alert for it whenever I had new email.

The reason your iPhone isn't telling you, you have received a new email, is because it hasn't been told to. On the iPhone 5s (same on all models -- 4s) the default setting for emails is hidden.
Here's a guide path to help.
Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Fetch new data -> scroll to the bottom, and set the fetch time from 'manual' to 'every 15, 30 or 60 minutes'
Your iPhone will now notify you of a new email.
