I lost my preroll sound on my track when recording

I recorded a guitar track and I would get my preroll sound before the actual recording punched in. All of a sudden now I don't get it anymore. It almost looks like it is recording a track over the pre-roll. No sound at all. How do I get my track sound back so I can play along before the punch in?

In order to hear "pre-roll" in Logic, you need to have the record fader up... AND... you need to use Auto-Punch. If your track is record-armed, the "pre-roll" control in the project settings will NOT result in track playback during the pre-roll.

To monitor pre-roll in Logic, you need to mark an Auto-Punch start and stop, then start playback before that recording selection--that's your "pre-roll."

It's an extra step compared with ProTools and most other DAWs, and I agree it would be nice if Logic's pre-roll simply played back the existing track up to the punch point.

Thanks James, I will give it a try...The thing of it was everything was going great. I put the marker bar on the place I want to start recording and press "R" and it would go back two bars and start playing the track and then I would pick it up at the marker. Now it still goes back two bars but no playback and I can still record at the marker but it's not doing what it was. I pushed something to make it stop but not sure what. I was messing with trying to split a track with a shortcut and may have hit a shortcut key that changed something.

This is exactly how it works on my system, I just tried a test. When I read your post I thought, yes, that sounds right, Logic backs up how many bars you're using for the Count-In. I only use a one-bar count so Logic only backs up one bar, plays your prerecorded tracks and picks up recording at the designated point.

This is in Logic 9.1.3, I haven't upgraded and probably won't as everything is running so well, I have no markers set and have not done anything special, plus it works that way whether it's recording separate tracks or overdub comp tracks.

But, wait... you guys aren't hearing playback on the record-armed track during the pre-roll period, are you ?

That's how I interpreted the original question:

1) Record from bars 1-20 on Track 1

2) Put the SPL at bar 10 for a punch-in

3) Enable a count-in/pre-roll of 4 bars

4) Press record

What happens is the SPL moves back to bar 6, and recording starts. But there is no playback of the existing region on Track 1 in bars 6-10. I can hear *other* tracks play back during that pre-roll period, but not the one that's record-armed.

As far as I know, this is always the way that Logic has worked, and I just confirmed it in a fresh project. Are you guys really getting different behavior ? I'd love to be able to drop the SPL somewhere, hit record, and hear the track I'm punching into during the pre-roll, but I've only ever been able to accomplish this using Auto-Punch.

Ok, so my curiosity just got the best of me and I am dupped again...I know what it is...when I press just the "S" key on the keyboard the pre-roll sound goes away. This is the problem but now even the previous versions are following this lead. I looked up some of the other posts but nothing matched my issue. Using Logic 9.1.1. Working perfect unitl I pushed that key. The keyboard commands has it assigned to "solo'.
