I just used root user to change shortname now it won't recognize root password

I gave this computer to a relative and wanted to change the shortname from mine to hers. I used NetInfo Manager in order to change to root user, created (and made note of) a root password. When I tried to Log On as the root user, it said I had the wrong password. Now I can't do anything! Can't change the root pw, can't change the shortname. What do I do now?

PowerBook, Mac OS X (10.4.11), 1.5 GHz 1.25GB

See if this helps.

Return to default desktop, apparent "loss" of home directory...

Or...

1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.

2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Reset Password from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)

Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Reset Password.
