Mac OS X and Sitecom NAS MD-253

So I have this brand new Macbook Pro running Lion 10.7.2 and the Sitecom NAS MD-253.

The problem I have is that I can access the NAS only via FTP.

There's no way I can get access to it in any other way.

I see the NAS in Finder under Shared and when I try to connect to it, either via smb or afp the message I get is that I either no shares available or I am not allowed to access them on the server.

I am connecting to the NAS with the user I created through the NAS web interface and I am granted unlimited space on the NAS.

I tried removing the user, I tried changing the file sharing (under preferences) to smb, afp or both, resetting, restarting, rebooting: nada, zero, niet.

The only thing I didn't try (yet) was wiring connecting the NAS to the macbook, but this would defeat the purpose of having the NAS under the router...

Not to mention that I can't run time machine on the NAS, and I can't move the iTunes library to the NAS.

Any help is appreciated....and pls make it easy to understand for an illiterate like me 🙂

Have you downloaded the drivers for the storage center? According to Sitecom's site there is no driver for Mac OS X 10.7. What are you planning on using the storage center for? Backup or just file sharing with other computers on your network?

The NAS has the latest firmare installed (currently 2.4.15), though I was not able to install the other packages they have on the site.

The main purpose would be file sharing; back-up is not mandatory for the time being.

Go to System Preferences/Security/Firewall and disable the firewall and see if it is connecting.

It was already disabled. I tried enabling it and then disabling...still not working.

Does the storage center have its own DHCP?

Yes, I believe it does. If it's related, it's set up with static ip.

What brand of a router do you have? Do you have any other mac computers in the LAN?

Router is Netgear N600 (WNDR3700). No other mac on the lan, just an old netbook (MSI U120) running linux: it has problems too (I can't see the content of the nas) but I am not bothered right now.

I had issues with TimeMachine package, the printer server and iTunes media sharing. Everything else works, SAMBA/FTP/BitTorrent actually work very well.

This box is very beautiful but it's firmware it's full of bugs (that is: it *****). You should be able to access it by the web interface, you just need to discover it's IP address (it should be something like 192.168.1.x). User and password are both: "admin" if unchanged.

Consider installing SSHD or telnet (if you don't know what they are, ignore this part 🙂):

I'm still struggling with the printer-server, it won't work out of the box (and/or if a printer is already turned on when you turn on the NAS), sometimes it crashes. If I find a solution for that package too, I'll post it on that forum.
